Ancient Art of Smudging

Ancient Art of Smudging

Ceremonial burning of different natural substances has been used for countless centuries around the world. It’s been used by many indigenous peoples of different cultures and religions. Some say smudging comes from early man in caves needing to repel insects, or change the aroma of unbathed bodies.

For instance, some herbs and natural leaves have been proven to be very beneficial. Natural leaves such as sage, as a medicinal remedy to kill bacteria, the cause of body order.

Spiritual based smudging ceremonies are often kept confidential by elders or leaders of different tribes, bands, races, religions and sects. Sacred practices involving this type of ritual are still secret today, and may remain so for a long time to come.

COVID-19 and Smudging Benefits

Today, smudging is becoming more and more popular. One of the reasons is because ancient cultures, religions and practices are becoming more readily available for individuals to learn and benefit from.  The internet, air travel, and television has expanded the interest in this ancient practice and its many benefits.

While the ancient art of smudging has a long history, today it’s most commonly used to ‘cleanse’ a space in the home, outside spaces, or even one’s own body. Spiritually, smudging is thought to be used to remove negativity and harmful energies. In some cases it’s even believed that certain negative forces and dark influences are chased away by burning certain herbs or plants and allowing the smoke to permeate an area to clear it.

Today, smudging has become a large part of our world, and in some cases even becoming mainstream and not particularly associated with a spiritual practice, but more practical. On the other hand, some people may not have a religious affiliation, but are spiritual and do believe in some ancient practices because they intuitively feel the importance of certain rituals. The use and practice of smudging has become common among certain individuals and groups since indigenous people in America have been kind enough to share its benefits, both spiritually and health-wise.
